- Abortion Information
- When Does Life Begin? - The
life of a baby begins long before he or she is born. A new individual human being begins
growing in the mother's uterus at fertilization, and if the baby's life is not
interrupted, he or she will someday become an adult man or woman.
- 19 weeks Survived! Babies can
routinely be saved at 21 to 22 weeks after fertilization, and sometimes, like Kenya, they
can be saved even younger. Viability is the time when the baby is able to survive
outside the mother.
- 18 weeks Perfectly formed
This beautiful unborn baby is 18 weeks old, just one week younger then Kenya was when she
was born.
Inside the mother, this baby could have been legally killed. However, outside of the
mother the baby would be fully protected by law.

- abortion alternatives - Throughout the
United States, there are nearly 3,000 Crisis Pregnancy
Centers staffed by volunteers ready to provide real help to women facing
unplanned or untimely pregnancies. In addition to providing pregnancy tests and
counseling, these centers often offer a full range of services, helping women obtain
housing, maternity and baby clothes, baby equipment, pre- and post-natal medical care,
legal assistance and financial support, information about adoption, and even advice on how
a woman in school can continue her education. Offering real and tangible assistance,
these centers have helped thousands of women to realize that they didnt have to
choose between their own lives and the lives of their unborn babies.

Abortion Clinics OnLine
- About Abortion Clinics OnLine -
Abortion Clinics OnLine is a directory service comprised of websites of over 150 providers
of abortion services and other reproductive health care. They may be private physician's
offices, state licensed clinics, private clinics, or hospital abortion services. To our
knowledge, no anti- abortion "pregnancy consultation" centers are included here.
- Abortion is legal in the United States through the second trimester (24 weeks). In some
special instances, abortions may be available after 24 weeks. All states have at least one
provider of early abortion services. Abortion services past 13 weeks are more scarce and
women may have to travel to other states for care. Some state laws may require parental
consent or notification for minors, 24 hour waiting periods, and other regulations. In
general though, abortion is the decision between a pregnant woman and her physician; and
whomever she wishes to include. Each woman should consider her other options of either
having the baby and keeping it or having the baby and giving it up for adoption before
choosing abortion. Early abortion is 8-10 times safer than childbirth, especially for
teenagers. In the end, though, it's the woman's choice. Nobody can force a woman to have
an abortion, regardless of her age
- Each year, over 1.5 million women have abortions. They come from all walks of life, all
races, all economic situations, all educational levels, all stratas of society, and all
states. Sometimes, abortion is the most empowering thing a woman can do, and over 30
million women have had abortions since it was legalized in 1973. It is nothing to be
ashamed of and whatever provider you choose should treat you with dignity and respect.

Considerations
- The Court acknowledged that after fetal viability, the state has acquired a
"compelling" interest in "potential life" and could prohibit abortion
altogether "except when it is necessary to preserve the life or health of the
mother." Viability was set as the "compelling" point "because the
fetus then presumably has the capacity for meaningful life outside the mother's womb.
State regulation protective of fetal life after viability thus has both logical and
biological justifications."
- "The time when viability is achieved may vary with each pregnancy, and the
determination of whether a particular fetus is viable is, and must be, a matter for the
judgment of the responsible attending physician."
- "Whenever it may occur, the attainment of viability may continue to serve as the
critical fact."
- The Role of Contraception in Reducing
Abortion
- Women using a method of contraception are only 15% as likely as women using no method to
have an abortion. In other words, contraception reduces the probability of having an
abortion by 85%. Yet, because of the enormous effort involved in practicing contraception
continuously and effectively for more than two decades, almost half of all American women
will have had at least one abortion by the time they are 45.
- The Limitations of U.S. Statistics on
Abortion
- AGI, on the other hand, directly surveys all known providers of abortion services, which
numbered 2,380 nationwide at last count. As a result, the number of abortions reported by
AGI is accepted as the more accurate and is somewhat higher than that report ed by the
CDCby 15%, on average (although the difference has narrowed somewhat in recent
years). Most likely, some abortions also go unreported to AGIprimarily office
procedures performed by physicians for their own patientsbut this numb er is
believed to be very small. Underreporting may become more prevalent if methods of
nonsurgical abortion become widely available in private physicians' offices.
- The Supreme Court has ruled repeatedly over a 20-year period that prior to fetal
viability, a woman has a constitutional right to decide to terminate her pregnancy in
consultation with her physician. Even after fetal viability, she must be able to do so t o
preserve her life or health. Although it is very difficult to determine when a particular
fetus is viable, 23-24 weeks of gestation is generally considered a minimum for viability.

- Induced Abortion Worldwide (May 99)
-
- 46 million women around the world have abortions each year. Of these women, 78% live in
developing countries and 22% in developed countries
- About 26 million women have legal abortions each year, and 20 million have abortions in
countries were abortion is restricted or prohibited by law.

Medical Abortion, a safe
alternative to surgical abortion.
- A non-surgical or medical abortion is a method of pregnancy termination that uses drugs
to first stop the growth of a pregnancy and then cause it to be completely expelled from
the woman's body. The drugs used are methotrexate and misoprostol. They have been used
safely in various aspects of medical care for many years. This method works for women
pregnant seven weeks or less (49 days from the first day of their last menstrual period.)
- The effectiveness of this drug combination in the first seven weeks of pregnancy (49
days counting from the first day of the last menstrual period) has been over 96%. At this
stage of pregnancy the embryo is 9-10 mm long(less that 1/2 inch).
